Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 45

पद्मासने स्थितः सम्यङ्मुखं कृत्वा तु पाणिना | धारयेद्वायुमूर्ध्वं च कुक्कुटासनमुत्तमम् ||

padmāsane sthitaḥ samyaṅmukhaṃ kṛtvā tu pāṇinā | dhārayedvāyumūrdhvaṃ ca kukkuṭāsanam uttamam ||

The execution of Kukkuṭāsana: from the lotus, the hands are placed firmly on the ground at the sides of the hips. One presses to lift the body, maintaining the crossed legs.

“Sustaining the air upward” (vāyum ūrdhvaṃ dhārayet) indicates kumbhaka — breath retention while maintaining the position. This combination of posture and prāṇāyāma intensifies the effects.

It is an advanced posture combining arm strength, balance, and hip flexibility. Whoever masters Kukkuṭāsana has a body truly prepared for deep meditation.
