Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 47
भूमावङ्गुष्ठहस्ताभ्यां तथोदरसमाश्रितः | वायुं धारयतो योगी विपरीतं च कारयेत् ||
bhūmāvaṅguṣṭhahastābhyāṃ tathodarasamāśritaḥ | vāyuṃ dhārayato yogī viparītaṃ ca kārayet ||
The execution: resting on the abdomen (position of certain types of headstands or inversions), retaining the breath, the body is inverted.
The description is ambiguous; it may refer to the candle (viparītakaraṇī classic) or a variation of headstand. In the candle, the feet are above the ground or elevated, supported on hands or elbows.
Inversion with kumbhaka (retention) intensifies the flow of blood and prāṇa toward the head, nourishing the brain and the pituitary and pineal glands.
