Śivasaṃhitā 2.57

Dvitīyaḥ paṭalaḥ — Microcosm

Sanskrit text

कामादयो विलीयन्ते ज्ञानादेव न चान्यथा ।

Transliteration

kāmādayo vilīyante jñānādeva na cānyathā |

Translation

Desires such as sexual desire dissolve only through knowledge, and not through any other means.

Commentary

This verse categorically states that only knowledge (jnana) can dissolve fundamental desires. The emphatic structure “jnana eva na ca anyatha” underscores that there is no other way. This reflects the non-dualistic perspective that direct realization of truth is the only means to transcend the conditioned nature of the mind.

The term kama (desire) in plural indicates the multiple impulses and desires that constitute ordinary experience. The word viliyante (dissolve) suggests a process of dissolution rather than suppression, indicating that knowledge transforms the very nature of these impulses.

In the context of yogic teachings, this verse emphasizes the primacy of knowledge over merely ethical or ascetic practices. While external control may be useful, only direct understanding of the true nature of reality can bring the lasting transformation that yoga seeks.
