मृत्योर्यदन्तरं तत्तद् विद्वांस आहुः सवितुर्वरेण्यं वृणीमहे हविषा वयं भगस्य देवस्य
mṛtyoryadantaraṃ tattad vidvāṃsa āhuḥ saviturvareṇyaṃ vṛṇīmahe haviṣā vayaṃ bhagasya devasya
That which is beyond death —that the sages declare. The desirable splendor of Savitṛ, we choose with our offering to the god Bhaga.
Mṛtyu (death) is here the ultimate limit of conditioned experience. Beyond it is the Reality that the vidvān (sages) know. Savitṛ is the sun as impeller of life, and his vareṇya (desirable) splendor is the light of consciousness. In our yoga practice, the “offering” (havis) is the surrender of ourselves, and Bhaga (the god of fortune) represents the spiritual prosperity that arises from this surrender. Consciously choosing the inner light is the decisive turn of practice.
