Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 12
रागरागवतिष्ठाभ्यां बन्धो मोक्ष इति स्थितिः
rāgarāgavatiṣṭhābhyāṃ bandho mokṣa iti sthitiḥ
Attachment and detachment — in them reside bondage and liberation
Two sides of the same coin, not two different coins. Attachment (rāga) is not a force that needs to be combated by its opposite; it is a direction that can be redirected. Vairāgya — dispassion, equanimity — is not the absence of rāga but its natural exhaustion when its mechanism is understood. Do not fight desire, says Vasiṣṭha; understand it. When you see how it is constructed, it dismantles itself.
