Ṣaṣṭha-prakaraṇam (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 13
जलं वह्निं तथा पृथ्वीं वायुं चाकाशमेव च । धारयेत् सुस्थिरं चित्तं पञ्चधारणया युतः ॥
jalaṃ vahniṃ tathā pṛthvīṃ vāyuṃ cākāśameva ca | dhārayet susthiraṃ cittaṃ pañcadhāraṇayā yutaḥ ||
Verse 13 further elaborates on the method of dhāraṇā by explicitly naming the five elements – jala (water), vahni (fire), prithvi (earth), vayu (air), and akasha (ether) – as the objects of concentration. The key instruction is to hold the mind firmly, sthirāgam, united with these five dhāraṇās. This suggests a technique of anchoring the awareness, using the tangible qualities of the elements as points of focus to gradually quiet the fluctuations of the prāṇa and establish a state of profound stillness. The precise application of these elemental dhāraṇās – a form of prāṇāyāma directed towards mental stability – is a fundamental component of yogic āsana and pratyāhāra, preparing the practitioner for deeper meditative states.
