Gati

Movement, destination, path. The Upaniṣads distinguish two paths of the soul after death: uttarā gati, the ascending path toward liberation, and dakṣiṇā gati, the lateral path leading to rebirth. In the Bhagavad Gītā (15.4-5), the gati toward the Supreme is attained by transcending ignorance and attachment, ascending the cosmic tree to its ultimate root.
