यदा पञ्चावतिष्ठन्ते ज्ञानानि मनसा सह । बुद्धिश्च न विचेष्टते तामाहुः परमां गतिम्
yadā pañcāvatiṣṭhante jñānāni manasā saha | buddhiś ca na viceṣṭate tām āhuḥ paramāṃ gatim
When the five instruments of knowledge stand still along with the mind, and the intellect does not stir — that they call the supreme goal.
The description of samādhi: cessation of mental activity.
Yadā pañca… avatiṣṭhante — when the five stand still. The five senses and their objects, inactive.
Jñānāni — instruments of knowledge. The senses as means of information.
Manasā saha — along with the mind. The mind also quiet, not discoursing.
Buddhiḥ ca na viceṣṭate — and the intellect does not stir. Not even discrimination operates.
Tām āhuḥ paramāṃ gatim — that they call the supreme goal. Kaivalya, liberation.
This is the description of deep meditative state: not emptiness but objectless fullness. The Self is revealed when the instruments of knowledge quiet down.
Yoga is this process of progressive stillness: from body to senses, from senses to mind, from mind to intellect, from intellect to the Self.
