The Ātman is without constructs, pure, and of the nature of existence-consciousness-bliss. For the one who knows this, fear and desire have no foothold. In chapter 9 this is applied to the most primitive pair of opposites: attraction and aversion. Both depend on the belief that the Self can gain or lose something; once sat-cit-ānanda is recognized as one’s own nature, that belief collapses.
