इन्द्रस्त्वं प्राण तेजसा रुद्रोऽसि परिरक्षिता त्वमन्तरिक्षे चरसि सूर्यस्त्वं ज्योतिषां पतिः

indrastvaṃ prāṇa tejasā rudro'si parirakṣitā tvamantarikṣe carasi sūryastvaṃ jyotiṣāṃ patiḥ

You are Indra by your power, you are Rudra as protector. You move in the intermediate space; you are the sun, the lord of lights.

Indra — the king of gods, representative of power and vital force. Prāṇa is Indra because it is the force that defeats the demons of the body (disease, weakness, death).

Rudra — the god of the storm, also the god of dissolution. Prāṇa is Rudra as parirakṣitā — the protector. Though Rudra destroys, he also protects his devotees.

Antarikṣa — the intermediate space, between heaven and earth. Prāṇa moves in this space, as the air we breathe. It also symbolizes the space between dense and subtle elements, where transformation occurs.

Sūrya, the sun, is identified with Prāṇa as jyotiṣāṃ patiḥ — the lord of all lights. The physical light of the sun is a symbol of the light of consciousness, the supreme Prāṇa that illuminates everything.

For the yogī, these names are objects of meditation. Visualizing Prāṇa as Indra, Rudra, Sūrya, helps establish the connection with the cosmic vital principle.
