That, verily, is powerful as power; medicinal as medicine. All these beings, uniting with the powerful, become medicinal. Whoever knows this, knows how both manifest.

Prāṇa is ugra — powerful, formidable, intense. Like fire, it can consume. But it is also bheṣaja — medicine, remedy, what cures.

Beings, by uniting (sambhūya) with the powerful, become medicinal. This is the law of yoga: by contact with the superior, we are transformed.

Ubhayaṃ sambhavati — “both manifest.” Power and cure, intensity and compassion, are two aspects of one. The fire that burns also purifies.

For the yogī: prāṇa is a powerful force that must be handled with respect. Used correctly, it is the supreme medicine; used incorrectly, it can harm. The knowledge of the guru is essential.
