Chapter 2 · Verse 10

आत्मानं सत्यमेकं चिदानन्दमयं शिवम्

ātmānaṃ satyam ekaṃ cid-ānandamayaṃ śivam

Janaka summarizes the nature of Ātman in four words: truth (satya), one (eka), consciousness-bliss (cit-ānanda), and auspicious (śiva). Everything else is false, māyā, an appearance. In chapter 2 this verse functions as the compact formula of realized knowledge: the Self alone is real, and all multiplicity is its illusory superimposition. Knowing this, one abides as ever-free awareness.
