Chapter 2 · Verse 16

न ते ज्ञानं नाज्ञानं न बन्धो न मुक्तिरस्ति

na te jñānaṃ nājñānaṃ na bandho na muktir asti

Aṣṭāvakra removes the four cornerstones of the spiritual seeker: jñāna, ajñāna, bandha, and mokṣa. From the standpoint of the absolute ātman, none of these categories apply, because they all presuppose a separate individual who could know, ignore, be bound, or be freed. The verse is not a philosophical conclusion but a direct cancellation of the framework within which seeking makes sense. For one who still identifies as a person, these words sound nihilistic; for one who has recognized non-duality (advaita), they simply describe the obvious. The teaching cuts deeper than optimism or pessimism: it points to a freedom that was never absent and therefore never needed to be achieved.
