Mokṣa-Sannyāsa Yoga · Verse 39
यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः | निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम्
yad agre cānubandhe ca sukhaṃ mohanam ātmanaḥ | nidrālasyapramādotthaṃ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam
That which at first and in continuation is pleasure that confuses the Self, born of sleep, laziness and heedlessness — that is said to be tāmasic.
Tāmasic pleasure: agre ca anubandhe ca — at first and afterwards. Always confusing, never liberating.
Nidrā-ālasya-pramāda-uttham — born of sleep (nidrā), laziness (ālasya), heedlessness (pramāda). It is lethargy, intoxication, evasion. Mohanam ātmanaḥ — confuses the Self, impedes knowledge.
