Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 20

पद्मासने स्थितो योगी बद्ध्वा चैव च जालिनीम् | धारयित्वा यथा न्यायं पूरयित्वा च मारुतम् ||

padmāsane sthito yogī baddhvā caiva ca jālinīm | dhārayitvā yathānyāyaṃ pūrayitvā ca mārutam ||

The preparation of Mahāvedha is identical to that of Mahābandha: lotus, sealing of nāḍīs, and pulmonary filling. Many traditions teach these practices as a continuous sequence.

The lotus maintains the base stable. The bandhas seal the energy leaks. The filled breath provides the fuel for ascent.

The difference lies in what follows: while Mahābandha focuses on sealing and retention, Mahāvedha adds the element of active piercing.
