यस्त्वविज्ञानवान्भवत्ययुक्तेन मनसा सदा । तस्येन्द्रियाण्यवश्यानि दुष्टाश्वा इव सारथेः ॥ १७॥
yas tv avijñānavān bhavaty ayuktena manasā sadā | tasya indriyāṇy avaśyāni duṣṭāśvā iva sāratheḥ
But he who is ignorant (lacking discernment), always with an uncontrolled mind — his senses are unmanageable, like bad horses of a charioteer.
Here the state of the unilluminated jīva is described: without vijñāna (discriminative knowledge), without yuktena manasā (disciplined mind), the senses become avaśya (unmanageable). The metaphor of rebellious horses perfectly describes how the senses, without the bridle of a trained mind, drag the individual from pleasure to pleasure, from suffering to suffering. For the practitioner of yoga, this verse is a warning: without awakened buddhi and without controlled mind, there is no possible liberation.
