Whoever knows this Ātman, the eater of sweetness, always near, as the lord of past and future, fears no more. This is in truth That.
This verse describes the Ātman as the enjoyer of all experiences.
Imaṃ madhvadaṃ — this eater of sweetness. Madhu means sweet, honey; vada = eater. The Ātman is the one who experiences and enjoys life.
Jīvam antikāt — the Jīva always near. The immanent individual being.
Īśānaṃ bhūtabhavyasya — the lord of past and future. Bhūta = past; Bhavya = future.
Na tato vijugupsate — does not fear after that. Knowledge of the Ātman dissolves all fear.
Etad vai tat — this is in truth That. The absolute identity.
In the practice of yoga, recognizing the Ātman as the witness of all experience transforms our relationship with the world.
