करणकिञ्चिद्भावेन प्रयोगात्तत्त्वदर्शनम् । विषमश्रवणे वापि ध्वनिं तमसि ध्यायतः ॥

karaṇakiñcidbhāvena prayogāt tattvadarśanam | viṣamaśravaṇe vāpi dhvaniṃ tamasi dhyāyataḥ ||

By practice with senses slightly active, vision of reality arises. Or meditating on sound in darkness, hearing irregularly.

Seventy-sixth technique. Darkness and faint sound. Karaṇakiñcidbhāvena — with senses barely active. Not annulled, not stimulated. In that intermediate state where senses are present but without clear object. Like in a dark and silent room.

Viṣamaśravaṇe — hearing irregularly, hearing sounds that form no pattern. The creak of a house at night. Irregular wind. Sounds without meaning that the mind cannot grasp or categorize.

Dhvaniṃ tamasi dhyāyataḥ — meditating on sound within darkness. Close your eyes. Sit in darkness. Listen. Do not seek specific sounds. Listen to the sound of darkness itself. Tattvadarśanam — vision of reality arises. When senses have nothing to hold onto, consciousness folds back toward its source.
