Daśama-prakaraṇam (Karma-yoga) · Verse 16

य एवं वेत्ति गुह्यं वै स योगी मुक्तिभाग्भवेत् । अज्ञानं हि भवं बन्धो ज्ञानं मुक्तिर्न संशयः ॥

ya evaṃ vetti guhyaṃ vai sa yogī muktibhāgbhavet | ajñānaṃ hi bhavaṃ bandho jñānaṃ muktirna saṃśayaḥ ||

This verse articulates the fundamental relationship between jnana – specifically, the direct apprehension of the guhyam – the secret of reality – and the attainment of mukti, liberation. The yogī who understands this profound truth, who grasps the nature of aajnana as the very cause of bondage, immediately becomes a participant in liberation. The concept of bandha, or bondage, isn’t merely a negative state but a fundamental condition arising from misidentification with the illusory self; it’s the sustained attachment to the phenomenal world due to a lack of discerning awareness. Crucially, the verse stresses that jnana is not simply intellectual assent but a transformative knowing, a realization that directly dissolves this bondage, establishing the path to mukti. This echoes a core tenet found throughout the Upaniṣads, where the eradication of ignorance is presented as the sole means to transcend the limitations of samsara.
