Aṣṭama-prakaraṇam (Dhyāna) · Verse 1

समाधिं वक्ष्यते गार्गि शृणुष्वावहिता भव । ध्यानस्य परमं स्थानं समाधिरित्युपदिश्यते ॥

samādhiṃ vakṣyate gārgi śṛṇuṣvāvahitā bhava | dhyānasya paramaṃ sthānaṃ samādhirityupadiśyate ||

Prakaraṇa 8 begins with a direct instruction to Gārgī, emphasizing the crucial role of attentive listening (shṛṇu). The phrase “be careful” – avahita – is particularly significant, demanding a focused and deliberate engagement with the teachings on samādhi. Samādhi, as presented here, is not merely a technique for achieving a tranquil state of mind, but rather the supreme state of meditation itself, a term imbued with considerable weight. The dhyeya – the object of meditation – serves as the vehicle for this transformation, guiding the practitioner toward a unified experience. The verse highlights the interconnectedness of the meditator, the object, and the act of meditation, suggesting that true samādhi arises when these elements coalesce into a single, undifferentiated whole, preparing the ātman for deeper insight. This foundational instruction underscores the need for rigorous mental discipline, akin to the yama and niyama that precede it, to establish the necessary stability for this profound practice.
