Daivāsura-Sampad-Vibhāga Yoga · Verse 12

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः | ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान्

āśā-pāśa-śatair baddhāḥ kāma-krodha-parāyaṇāḥ | īhante kāma-bhoga-artham anyāyena artha-sañcayān

Bound by hundreds of ropes of hope, devoted to desire and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the enjoyment of desire.

The condition of bondage. Baddhāḥ — bound, chained. The ropes: āśā-pāśa-śataiḥ — hundreds (śata) of ropes (pāśa) of hope (āśā). Each desire generates hope, each hope binds.

Dedication: kāma-krodha-parāyaṇaḥ — completely given over to desire and anger. The action: īhante — they strive, they exert themselves for artha-sañcayan — accumulating wealth/possessions (artha). The method: anyāyena — by unjust, illegitimate means. The purpose: kāma-bhoga-artham — for the enjoyment of desires.
