Forty-sixth technique. Meditation with light. Tejasā sūryadīpādeḥ — by luminosity of sun, lamp or other light source. Ākāśe savire gurau — in vast expansive space. Gaze fixes upon light, but not the source rather its expansion in space.

Dṛṣṭiṃ nikṣipya — deposit the gaze. Without effort. Without fixing. Gaze rests like a bird on a branch. Lightly. Sunlight or candlelight expands in surrounding space. Follow that expansion with relaxed gaze.

Svātmarūpaṃ prakāśate — one’s own form of Self reveals itself. Outer light signifies inner light. Consciousness is luminous by nature — prakāśa is one of its names in Kashmir Śaivism. Contemplating physical light, you recognize the light of consciousness that makes all perception possible.
