Prathamaḥ paṭalaḥ — Jñāna

Sanskrit text

आलोक्य सर्वशास्त्राणि विचार्य च पुनः पुनः ।

Transliteration

ālokya sarvaśāstrāṇi vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ |

Translation

Having studied all the Shastras and having pondered over them well, again and again, this Yoga Sastra has been found to be the only true and firm doctrine.

Commentary

This verse establishes the preeminence of yoga over all other philosophical doctrines. The assertion does not arise from mere opinion, but from exhaustive study and repeated reflection on all available scriptures. Yoga is presented here as the definitive path that integrates and transcends all previous knowledge.

The term śāstra refers to the scriptures or authoritative texts that codify traditional knowledge. Yoga śāstra specifically denotes the systematic science of yoga as presented in these texts. The use of śāstra implies not only texts, but the entire corpus of knowledge and practice that constitute the yogic tradition.

This approach reflects the traditional Indian method of study, where knowledge is acquired through repeated study (punar punaḥ) and deep reflection. The assertion that yoga is the firmest doctrine suggests that it provides a more solid epistemological foundation than other philosophical schools.
