पुरुष एवेदं विश्वं कर्म तपो ब्रह्म परामृतम् । एतद्यो वेद निहितं गुहायां सोऽविद्याग्रन्थिं विकिरतीह सोम्य
puruṣa evedaṃ viśvaṃ karma tapo brahma parāmṛtam | etad yo veda nihitaṃ guhāyāṃ so'vidyāgranthiṃ vikiratīha somya
The Person is all this: the universe, action, austerity, the supreme Brahman, immortality. Whoever knows this hidden in the cavern, unties here itself the knot of ignorance, O noble one.
The culminating verse: direct knowledge liberates.
Puruṣa eva idam — the Person is all this. There is no duality; everything is expression of the single Person.
Viśvaṃ karma tapaḥ — universe, action, austerity. The manifested, the process, the practice — all is him.
Brahma parāmṛtam — supreme Brahman, immortality. The essence and the result: what never dies.
Nihitaṃ guhāyām — hidden in the cavern. The heart, the innermost, where the most valuable is hidden.
Avidyāgranthiṃ vikirati — unties the knot of ignorance. Granthi is the knot that binds; knowledge cuts it.
Iha — here itself. Not in another world, not after death. Liberation is immediate.
To know this is to be free. Everything else is preparation for this recognition.
