Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 27

आत्मप्रत्ययबोधेन मुक्तिर् नान्येन केनचित्

ātmapratyayabodhena muktir nānyena kenacit

Liberation is through understanding of the Self; not by any other means

Key verse: liberation is not a result to be obtained, it is a recognition to be had. Pratyaya — direct conviction, immediate evidence — is not belief, not faith, not opinion. It is the recognition that arises when the mind turns upon itself and discovers it is not what it thought it was. This recognition depends on no rites, no teachers, no mantras, no postures. It depends on the clarity of inquiry. Everything else is preparation of the ground.
