त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः | कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्
tri-vidhaṃ narakasya idaṃ dvāraṃ nāśanam ātmanaḥ | kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṃ tyajet
Triple is this gate of hell, destructive of the Self: desire, anger and greed. Therefore, these three must be abandoned.
The three enemies of the ātman: kāma (unreasoning desire), krodha (anger), lobha (greed, avarice). They are dvāra — gates, entrances to narakasya — hell. They are nāśana — destructive, destroyers.
Their target: the ātman, the true Self. The instruction is clear: tasmāt etat trayaṃ tyajet — therefore, these three must be abandoned. This triad also appears in Patañjali’s yoga as obstacles (kleśa) that produce suffering.
