Praśna Upaniṣad · 3..8
आदित्यो ह वै बाह्यः प्राण उदयतेषा ह्येनं चाक्षुषं प्राणमनुगृहाणात् पृथिव्यां या देवता सैषा पुरुषस्यापानमवष्ठभ्यान्तरा यदाकाशः स समानो वायर्व्यानः
ādityo ha vai bāhyaḥ prāṇa udayateṣa hyenaṃ cākṣuṣaṃ prāṇamanugṛhāṇāt pṛthivyāṃ yā devatā saiṣā puruṣasyāpānamavaṣṭabhyāntarā yadākāśaḥ sa samāno vāyurvyānaḥ
The sun, verily, is the external Prāṇa; for rising, it favors the ocular Prāṇa of this one. The deity that is in the earth supports the Apāna of man. The space in between, the Ākāśa, is Samāna. The wind is Vyāna.
Here is established the correspondence between the five internal prāṇas and the cosmic elements:

Āditya (the sun) → Prāṇa external. The sun, rising, activates the cākṣuṣa prāṇa — the prāṇa of the eyes, the visual faculty.

Pṛthivī-devatā (the terrestrial deity) → Apāna. Earth attracts downward, as apāna (descending breath) draws toward the lower organs.

Ākāśa (the intermediate space) → Samāna. Equilibrium, equalization (sama), occurs in the intermediate space, as digestion balances what is consumed.

Vāyu (the wind) → Vyāna. Wind circulates everywhere, as vyāna (diffused breath) circulates throughout the whole body.
This correspondence is the basis of advanced prāṇāyāma practice: harmonizing individual prāṇa with cosmic elements.
