Śūnya Dhāraṇā · Dhāraṇā 38
निस्तरङ्गोपदेशाने शान्ते चित्तोदयं विना । भावो महोदधेरिव तत्त्वं तत्स्वरूपकम् ॥
nistaraṅgopadheśāne śānte cittodhayaṃ vinā | bhāvo mahodadher iva tattvaṃ tatsvarūpakam ||
Without waves, pacified, without mental arising — like the state of the great ocean. That is the reality, that is its own nature.
Thirty-eighth dhāraṇā. The last of the void group. Nistaraṅga — without waves. Śānte — pacified. Cittodhayam vinā — without arising of mind. The ocean without waves. The mind without thoughts. Not because waves are bad or thoughts enemies. But because the calm ocean reveals its depth.
Bhāvaḥ mahodadheḥ iva — like the state of the great ocean. The metaphor is exact. The agitated ocean shows surface. The calm ocean shows depth. The agitated mind shows contents. The calm mind shows its nature.
Tattvaṃ tatsvarūpakam — that is the reality, that is its own form. There is nothing to seek beyond the calm mind. Calm is not the means. It is the end. Not the forced calm of repression. The natural calm of ocean that has ceased being disturbed. That is Bhairava.
