निस्तरङ्गोपदेशानां शान्तानां भावयेत्स्थितिम् । आत्मानमाकाशमिति ध्यायेदात्मानमव्ययम् ॥

nistaraṅgopadeśānāṃ śāntānāṃ bhāvayet sthitim | ātmānam ākāśam iti dhyāyed ātmānam avyayam ||

Contemplate the state of serene teachings, without waves. Meditate on the Self as space — meditate on the imperishable Self.

Ninety-seventh dhāraṇā. The Self as space. Nistaraṅgopadeśānām — teachings without waves, without turbulence. Truths that do not agitate but quiet. Śāntānām bhāvayet sthitim — contemplate their state of peace.

Ātmānam ākāśam iti dhyāyet — meditate on the Self as space. The ākāśa — space — is the best metaphor for ātman. It has no form but allows all forms. It has no color but houses all colors. It cannot be cut, burned, wetted, nor dried. It is omnipresent and immutable.

Ātmānam avyayam — the imperishable Self. What you are does not perish. Not because it lasts long but because it never began. Space was not born when the room was built and will not die when the room collapses. You are that space. This meditation is simple: sit and be space. Let everything happen within you without affecting you.
